todays news

Ruth is in the hospital as i type - i'll ask her to post a message later or will try to do so myself. no news today as yet other than to say that mark is on a ward and out of ICU which is good on the whole but the risk of a hospital bug goes up as does the company of annoying people in the beds around him! the latter being a small price to pay for restoration of health!

So the monsoon arrived with a flourish - a spectacular display of thunder and lightning and the opressive temperatures and humidity has fallen dramatically. suddenly the mood lightens and people start smiling - it reminds me rather ironically of what happens in England when the summer comes and people start smiling and talking and enjoying life - here we do it in reverse.

So the children strip off and rush out to enjoy the cold rain after weeks of opressive heat. For once I am not sweating (for the last three months I have not stopped). It is blish for the time being - and much needed.

On the way to work I drive past the shacks and slums of the urban poor - heavy rain is not so much fun here - homes of plastic and cardboard do not fae well in the rain and the open sewars tend to over flow and the all round lack of any form of sanitation does not help....... life is a fine balance for so many people here in India, one small crisis could slide them down the ladder and into poverty, the balance is fine and hard to maintain.

So whilst I rejoice in the cool and freshness of the monsoon and enjoy the smell of the rain on the hardened earth, I am reminded that others have a different perspective with the rain soaking the megre posessions thaey have and the only stench being that of the over flowing sewars and drains cutting through their slums...

Anyway wimbeldon is about to start for you guys, so I assume there will be at least a week on non stop rain for you to enjoy!!
